A question often arises regarding the durability of 3D printed parts. While 3D printed plastic is far more common, there are machines that will directly 3D print metal. I'm sure it's not hard to imagine that a 3D printed plastic part is generally not suitable for use where a metal part was originally used. particularly in situations where durability and heat resistance are necessary. Plastic parts that have been 3D printed also tend to be porous and may crack, warp, or de-laminate over time. And while 3D printed metal might be cost prohibitive, consider that a 3D printed part may be just the tool to be useful in pattern making for cast parts. Take a look at a couple of these videos that might give some ideas about 3D printing and casting.
These videos are from the YouTube user "Myfordboy" and are an example of what can be done with 3D printing and metal casting.
